Constant Idle Speed While Stationary: Intelligently Controlled with IOREVO Idle Control

The Challenge

For a customer-specific application, the engine speed of a commercial vehicle needed to be automatically and consistently raised to 1,000 revolutions per minute while the vehicle was stationary.

The specific requirement: the engine speed increase may only be active when the vehicle is at a standstill. As soon as the vehicle starts moving, the function must be automatically suspended. When the vehicle comes to a stop again, the engine speed should automatically return to the defined target value of 1,000 rpm and remain stable.

No manual activation by the driver is required. The system independently detects the current vehicle state and controls the function according to the situation.

The Solution: IOREVO Idle Control

The application was implemented using the new IOREVO Idle Control.

The platform not only enables a targeted increase in idle speed, but can also capture relevant vehicle data via the CAN bus and process it in real time.

Depending on the vehicle and application, this may include:

  • current vehicle speed
  • selected gear or transmission position
  • engine operating state
  • enable and safety signals
  • additional available vehicle parameters

Based on this information, IOREVO Idle Control reliably detects whether the vehicle is stationary and whether the requirements for increasing engine speed are fulfilled.

Automatic Adaptation to the Vehicle State

As soon as the vehicle is stationary, the engine speed is controlled and raised to the defined target value of 1,000 rpm. The integrated control system continuously monitors the actual engine speed and automatically compensates for deviations.

When the vehicle starts moving, the idle speed increase is immediately deactivated. During driving, normal control of the engine speed remains fully with the vehicle and the driver.

When the vehicle comes to a stop again, IOREVO Idle Control detects the changed state via CAN bus data and reactivates engine speed control. The engine speed is automatically raised back to 1,000 rpm and kept constant.

This creates a fully automated sequence:

Vehicle stationary: engine speed control active.
Vehicle moving: engine speed control deactivated.
Vehicle stationary again: engine speed control automatically resumes.

Stable Even Under Changing Load Conditions

A constant engine speed is particularly important when additional consumers or auxiliary units are driven by the vehicle engine.

Examples include:

  • generators and alternators
  • hydraulic pumps
  • compressors
  • cooling and air-conditioning systems
  • charging systems
  • working machinery
  • additional electrical or mechanical special equipment

When such systems are switched on or off, the load on the engine changes. Without active control, this can cause the engine speed to drop or fluctuate.

IOREVO Idle Control continuously monitors the actual engine speed and adjusts control according to the current load. This keeps the defined engine speed stable even under changing load conditions.

The result is more reliable supply to connected systems, more consistent operating conditions and greater process reliability.

Integration via CAN Bus

A key advantage of the IOREVO platform is the ability to intelligently incorporate existing vehicle data into the control logic.

Instead of evaluating only a single signal, multiple states can be linked together. This allows the idle speed increase to be precisely adapted to the respective application.

Possible enable conditions include:

  • vehicle speed equals zero
  • defined transmission position
  • parking brake activated
  • engine running
  • enable signal from an external control element
  • active auxiliary unit
  • defined battery or system voltage

Lockout conditions can also be defined, under which engine speed control must not be activated.

This enables a robust and safe functional logic that goes far beyond a simple static idle speed increase.

The Test Vehicle

Implementation and testing were carried out on the following vehicle:

VW Crafter 35 Panel Van (SY)
Engine: 2.0 TDI
Power: 140 hp / 103 kW
Displacement: 1,968 cc
Engine code: DNAE

During testing, the engine speed was automatically controlled to 1,000 rpm while the vehicle was stationary.

During driving, the function was reliably suspended. Once the vehicle came to a stop again, engine speed control resumed automatically.

More Than a Conventional High-Idle Solution

Conventional idle speed increase systems often work only with fixed activation via a switch or individual input signals.

IOREVO Idle Control goes one decisive step further. By processing CAN bus data, the function can respond to the actual vehicle state and take complex enable conditions into account.

This enables:

  • automatic activation and deactivation
  • precise engine speed control
  • vehicle-specific safety logic
  • integration of external consumers and auxiliary units
  • flexible adaptation to different use cases

Flexible Solution for Commercial and Special-Purpose Vehicles

IOREVO Idle Control is suitable for numerous applications in commercial vehicles, emergency vehicles, municipal vehicles and special-purpose vehicles.

Typical fields of application include:

  • service and workshop vehicles
  • rescue and emergency vehicles
  • refrigerated vehicles
  • camper and expedition vehicles
  • municipal vehicles
  • vehicles with hydraulic body systems
  • mobile power supply systems
  • industrial special solutions

The desired target speed and the required enable conditions can be defined on a project-specific basis. This makes the platform suitable for individual projects and retrofit applications as well as vehicle solutions close to series production.

IOREVO Idle Control: Intelligent Engine Speed Control for Individual Applications

With IOREVO Idle Control, increased idle speeds can not only be activated, but controlled intelligently, safely and according to the actual vehicle state.

The combination of CAN bus data processing, automatic state detection and precise engine speed control creates a flexible platform for demanding vehicle applications.

The result in this project: a constant engine speed of 1,000 rpm while stationary, automatic deactivation while driving and automatic resumption of control as soon as the vehicle comes to a stop again.

IOREVO Idle Control: stable engine speed, intelligent vehicle data processing and reliable control in one flexible solution.
